The REAL Cost of Software

When evaluating software, potential customers will eventually ask, “what is the cost?”  When measuring “cost”, price alone is not the determining factor and an even better question may be “what is it costing us not having this software solution?”

In other words good software is an investment not a cost.  Good software will increase capacity and decrease overhead; it will aid in increasing throughput and decreasing errors; it will basically save time and money.  Good software is an investment in better business.

To aid in the decision making process, Comsense Inc. offers a business analysis that helps customers evaluate the “cost” of software.  This tool is based on input from customers who had different systems and then switched to software tools by Comsense Inc.

Customers who use software tools by Comsense Inc. have said that their capacity has increased, errors have decreased, and more money is going to the bottom line.  Customers have also said that e.Catalogs are huge time savers.  The business analysis covers each of these areas.

So when you are thinking of the cost of a piece of software the better question may be, “what is not implementing this software costing us?”  Answering this question will give you the REAL cost of software tools.

If you would like a business analysis please contact Comsense Inc.

e.Catalog Update

by Neil Teas, AHC – Director of Catalog Development

When starting this report, I had been working on a database that turned out to be practically a whole new catalog – most if not all products have been changed.  Comsense Inc. does most of work behind an e.Catalog; however, after updating you will need to check discounts, net pricing, and inventory.  With that in mind following are a few suggestions that can help:

  1. Notify everyone of e.Catalog updates
  2. Check discounts on product and options.  Pay careful attention to add discounts on new products and options
  3. Products with NET pricing will need to be reviewed and updated.
  4. Make a plan for discontinued products.  Do they effect stock inventory? Are these products used in current projects and should they be changed to other product?
  5. Review products and catalogs you maintain.
  6. Finally be sure to update the inventory costing, a step that has been missed many times. In the situation such as the database I am working with, you most likely will have inventory that needs to be addressed. You may wish to create completely new inventory codes or merge the new product into existing codes.

As always Comsense Inc. support will be there to back you up so be sure to contact them if you any questions about updates.

All that being said, Comsense Inc. is pleased to announce that Mag Security is now a supported e.Catalog.  Please contact us if you would like this e.Catalog added to your subscription.

Program Updates

The most current version of the Opening Suite by Comsense Inc. which includes SpecWriter, Advantage, and Elevations is 1.01.0196.

There are many enhancements in this version of the software listed below are some of the more prominent ones:

1.      Hardware Set Search
You have a long list of hardware sets and you are looking for one in particular?  Try using the hardware set search in the hardware window.  This tool allows you to input criteria that you are looking for and then go directly to the related set.

2.      Where is this hardware used?
Though this feature was added in an earlier version it is worth mentioning again.  Under the product tab in the hardware window you can right click on a product, click on “where used,” and find out all of the different hardware sets where that particular product is used.

3.      Reapply Default Preps
After changing a hardware prep you can use this tool to reapply the preps to all of the openings on the project.  This tool is found in the default preps window on the tool bar.

4.      Replace with nothing
After using the find and replace tool in the quick door take-off you realize that you filled a column that should have been left blank.  Don’t fret you can clear all of the items in that column by using the replace row and a number sign (#) in the column that you want to clear.

5.      Hardware Schedule Report
Two more report options have been added to this report. One option is to include short codes the other will give a full description of the door and frame.

Each month the Program Updates section of the e.News letter will contain information on the most current version of the software and enhancements that have been made.
