Have Laptop, Will Work

Many of you have asked, “Do you have a laptop version of Advantage?”  Advantage will run on a laptop, but maybe the better question is, “Can I work on my projects when I am away from the office?”  You bet!  With the advent of high speed access to the internet there are many tools to allow you to work at the office when away from the office.

“What about a laptop version,” you ask, “You know, download my project from the server onto my laptop, work on it at home or anywhere, then bring my laptop back to the office and have all the data transfer to the main database?”  It is possible to program this type of data exchange; however, highly discouraged.  “Why,” you ask?

There are a few compelling reasons.  1.  The complexity of keeping data synchronized such as company maintained catalogs, in-house labor operations, buying programs, and master discount files to name a few.  2. The possibility of data being corrupted in the transfer process which is rare but can happen.  3. The concerns of having the company database with all related information on a laptop that could be stolen or otherwise compromised.

So to avoid the chancrous chasm of complexity, corruption, and possible compromises, Comsense Inc. recommends an internet solution such as Terminal Services, Citrix, Remote Desktop Sharing, PC Anywhere, etc.  Any of these solutions will give you the ability to work at the office while you are not at the office and will significantly reduce the chance of your data being out of sync or corrupted or any number of potential problems.

For best results you will need high speed access to the internet at the office and at the place from which you will be working.  A dial-up connection will work; however, it is slow.

You will find that remote computing over the internet is an effective, efficient, and painless process.

e.Catalog Update

by Neil Teas – Director of Catalog Development

‘Tis the season for hardware pricing updates. System administrators should be aware of some important differences between downloads for AHM and Advantage.

AHM e.Catalog updates will be listed in First Class.  You can download them at your convenience and then apply the new e.Catalog price books  whenever you like. With Advantage, any available updates will be downloaded and be applied automatically if you select Catalog Updates in the Program Update Wizard.

With Advantage, there is always a notice given when a database update is being downloaded. You may want to let your staff know when updates occur and have them look at “catalog status” to see notes on individual catalogs. (See sidebar for directions on how to access catalog status)

Advantage has been designed to continue using the price list initially used when the project was first estimated. In other words if a project was estimated one morning using a 2002 price list, then a 2003 price list was applied later, the next time you run the estimate you will still be using 2002 pricing unless you manually change the setting.

e.Catalog price books are currently being updated with 2003 pricing and are almost complete.  Manufacturers have been working more closely with Comsense Inc to improve the time it takes to release electronic pricebooks which will allow Comsense Inc. to get the electronic pricebooks to your computer faster.
