Windows 7 Released, Comsense Opening Suite Officially Windows 7 Compatible

Congratulations to Microsoft for officially launching Windows 7 today. Comsense is proud to announced that the Comsense Opening Suite software, our flagship product for efficiently and effectively operating architectural door, frame and hardware distribution businesses, has achieved the Microsoft Compatible with Windows 7 designation.

Comsense has been testing the Comsense Opening Suite on the Windows 7 platform since the Release Candidate version was published in early 2009. We have been excited to see the performance improvements, and polishing that Microsoft has achieved with this latest version of their operating system. Comsense Opening Suite successfully completed the standard set of tests required by Microsoft to achieve the Compatible with Windows 7 designation in September.

As many of you have hopefully noticed in our eCatalog Update feed, a number of image updates have been released recently that you can download and apply to your system. We release so many eCatalog updates that the notices are quickly lost from view in our What's New page in Advantage. To help you find image updates that you may have missed we have compiled a list of available downloads which you can view from the link below. Please remember that these downloads are cumulative releases, so you must have applied images from your Image DVDs prior to applying the downloaded updates.

Windows XP Availability

Many of our customers have voiced their concern over the upcoming End-Of-Life of Windows XP on June 30, 2008. This is definitely a legitimate concern, since Windows Vista removed the 16 bit DOS subsystem required to run AHM. The tune from Microsoft regarding this type of dilemma is to turn to their virtualization offerings including Virtual PC, Virtual Server/Hyper-V, or Terminal Services.

Many of our customers have begun implementing one or more of these technologies, with Terminal Services being the most common. We are far from alone in this dilemma.

Dell has taken the position to support customers who are not yet ready/willing to make the switch to Vista. Once the June deadline passes they will be offering an optional Downgrade Rights package with Windows Vista Business and Windows Vista Ultimate What this means is that you actually purchase a Windows Vista license, but exercise the downgrade rights available within the Windows Vista license and have Dell actually exercise those rights on your behalf by installing Windows XP at the factory on your new machine. Edit - Windows XP is not reaching End-Of-Life June 30, 2008. This date marks the end of Direct OEM and Retail License Availability (see http://www.microsoft.com/windows/lifecycle/default.mspx). Windows XP will continue to have extended support through to 2012 (see http://support.microsoft.com/gp/lifecycle)
